A.J. O'Hagan was hired as sports information director at Monroe College - Bronx in July of 2023.
O'Hagan comes to Monroe - Bronx after serving as the sports information director at Yeshiva University for the previous seven and a half years. He oversaw media and public relations for Yeshiva's 15 varsity sports teams, including maintenance of the department's website and inputting statistics during all of Yeshiva's home contests. O'Hagan enhanced YU Athletics' social media presence and through his efforts in public relations and media relations, he helped the Yeshiva Maccabees become a nationally recognized name.
During O'Hagan's seven and a half years at YU, he worked with external media outlets such as NBC New York, PIX11 News, SNY, the New York Post, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, CBS Sports, and ABC 7 Eyewitness News to provide coverage and publicity for Yeshiva's varsity teams.
O'Hagan helped the student-athletes earn conference, regional, academic, and national awards by showcasing their accomplishments in both athletics and in the classroom. He also increased YU's exposure to a wider audience by working with BoxCast to provide live streaming video broadcasts for several Macs teams.
An active participant in professional development, O'Hagan is a member of the College Sports Communicators (CSC), formerly known as CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), and serves on its Goodwill and Wellness Committee. He is co-chair of the CSC Disability and Mental Health Committee. A proud individual on the autism spectrum, O'Hagan is a co-captain of Team Autism Awareness and Acceptance, a program that competes in the CSC Fitness Challenge. He has spoken at several panels and conferences to promote autistic/neurodivergent individuals and their families.
During the 2022-23 academic year, O'Hagan was the region representative on the NCAA Division III Sports Information Directors Cabinet (D3SIDA).
In addition to his involvement with CSC, O'Hagan serves as charity chairperson for the Eastern Athletic Communications Association (East-Comm) Board. During the past two years, O'Hagan worked with several college athletic departments, minor league baseball affiliates, and the Boston Red Sox Foundation to gather hats, bobble heads, tickets, signed photos, etc. to be used for prizes at the East-Comm Charity Raffle. Thousands of dollars were raised for the following charities: The National Alliance on Mental Illness - Baltimore, The VS. Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House - Springfield, Berni and Murcer Friends for Life, and the Ryan Yanoshak Fund.
In 2021, O'Hagan was honored by CoSIDA with the Rising Star Award (College Division) which is presented annually to a University Division and a College Division member with 10 years of full-time service or less in the profession for service, dedication, energy, and enthusiasm that make the individual a "rising star" in sports information. He also successfully nominated a pair of YU student-athletes to become CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, including CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year Gabriel Leifer in 2020-21.
Back in the 2019-20 season, O'Hagan covered the Yeshiva University men's basketball team's historic season as the program advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, won the Skyline Conference Championship, earned its first national ranking in school history (finishing No. 8 in the D3hoops.com Men's National Poll), and concluded the season with the best record in all of NCAA Division III, at 29-1. The men's basketball team won 50 consecutive games from November of 2019 until December of 2021 and was ranked No. 1 in the country by D3hoops.com during that stretch. Yeshiva once again won the Skyline Championship in 2021. One of the student-athletes O'Hagan covered for four years, Ryan Turell, was drafted by the Detroit Pistons' G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise, in the first round of the 2022 G League Draft.
In 2017-18, O'Hagan was the primary contact for the YU women's tennis team that made history by winning its first Skyline Conference Championship since 1999 and becoming the first women's program in school history to compete in the NCAA Postseason. That same year, he covered the men's basketball program that won its first ever Skyline Conference Championship, and earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance in team history.
In the fall of 2022, O'Hagan covered the Macs men's soccer team's deep playoff run which concluded with the program's first ever appearance in the Skyline Conference Final.
O'Hagan covered the Yeshiva men's tennis team winning four Skyline Titles and two NCAA Tournament matches, during his tenure at YU.
In March of 2016, O'Hagan was the media relations coordinator for the NCAA Fencing Northeast Regional Championship.
In September of 2016, he earned an Alumni Award for "Young Leadership" from his alma mater, Utica College (Now Utica University).
Prior to Yeshiva, O'Hagan served as the assistant sports information director at Lehman College for two and a half years. He assisted in the publicity of Lehman College's 18 NCAA Division III sports teams, and handled the statistics for all of Lehman's home games. He was the interim sports Information director at Lehman for three months, from July to October, in 2015. While at Lehman, O'Hagan covered two individual national champions, both in track.
From 2011-2013, O'Hagan worked in the Manhattanville College Athletic Department, in Purchase, N.Y., where he was an administrative assistant. Among his duties were facilities scheduling, contracts, and video production for the Valiants men's ice hockey program. Additionally, he served as the intramural director and helped out in the sports information office, writing game recaps.
A graduate of Utica College, O'Hagan was the video coordinator for the Pioneers men's ice hockey team. He was also the sports editor for the Utica College Tangerine, the college newspaper, in 2011. He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism in 2011, and was named the National Collegiate Journalist of the Year by the National Society for Collegiate Journalists.
O'Hagan served as a freelance reporter for the Buffalo News in 2011, covering the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division I and Division II Boys Ice Hockey Championships.
Residing in the Bronx, O'Hagan received his M.S. in sports business management from Manhattanville College in 2013.
